Expand your scope with clarity and confidence.

This enhancement supports eligible clinicians in providing substance use disorder counseling within the scope allowed by Washington law. The credential can increase your value to employers, expand your role on clinical teams, and strengthen your ability to deliver truly integrated care for clients with co-occurring disorders. It also includes important limits: the enhancement applies in approved settings and with clients who have both a substance use disorder and a mental health disorder. When a client needs a higher level of substance use care, clinicians are expected to make a reasonable effort to connect that person to the appropriate level of care.

Who is this for?

This course is designed for Washington mental health professionals seeking the Co-occurring Disorder Specialist Enhancement through the WA State Department of Health, including: licensed independent clinical social workers; licensed mental health counselors; licensed marriage and family therapists; licensed psychologists; qualified agency-affiliated counselors who meet Washington’s enhancement requirements; associates and clinicians working toward full licensure who want to prepare for future eligibility; and behavioral health clinicians working in integrated care, outpatient mental health, PACT/ACT, community behavioral health, hospital-based behavioral health, or other clinical settings serving individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

Associate level licensees may complete the educational & supervision requirements while working toward full licensure, but cannot apply for this enhancement until holding qualifying independent Washington licensure.

Why train with Jeffery J. Roskelley, LICSW

Co-occurring work is complex. It calls for strong clinical judgment, a real understanding of serious mental illness and addiction, and training that stays close to actual practice.

Jeff brings years of experience in serious mental illness, substance use treatment, community psychiatry, workforce development, and clinician training. He understands this work from the inside and teaches it in a way that is practical, grounded, and directly useful.

FAQ's
COD Enhancement Training

Will this training fully qualify me for the COD Specialist enhancement?

This course is designed to meet the 60-hour educational requirement defined by the Washington Department of Health. The full enhancement pathway also includes supervised experience and an exam, which are separate steps completed outside of this training.

Where can I find more information on the WA State COD Specialist Enhancement?

Please visit the dedicated COD Specialist Enhancement Washington State Department of Health website for more information: https://doh.wa.gov/licenses-permits-and-certificates/professions-new-renew-or-update/co-occurring-disorder-specialist-enhancement

Do I need to already work with substance use clients to take this training?

No. Many clinicians entering this training already encounter substance use in their work but may not feel fully confident addressing it. This course is designed to build that confidence and provide a clear framework, whether substance use is already central in your work or becoming more relevant over time.

How is this different from other substance use trainings?

Many trainings focus on isolated topics or theory. This program is structured to help you understand how everything fits together in practice—from assessment and ASAM placement to engagement, relapse, and treatment planning—within an integrated co-occurring framework.

Is this more academic or practical?

The content is grounded in research and state requirements, but the focus is practical application. The goal is for you to leave with a clear sense of how to approach real clients, not just understand concepts.

What if I feel overwhelmed by co-occurring cases right now?

That’s very common—and part of why this training exists. The course is designed to reduce overwhelm by providing structure, helping you move from uncertainty to a more steady, step-by-step way of approaching complex cases.

Can you share details of each training date topic?

What is the difference between SOUND Life Recovery and SOUND Life Learning?

SOUND Life Recovery is our therapy private practice where we offer mental health support to individuals & their families, as well as supervision and individual consultation to other mental health professionals. Generally, if conversations are happening that are HIPAA protected, we filter those through our therapy business.

Services offered through SOUND Life Recovery: Individual/group supervision, individual consultation

More information about SOUND Life Recovery can be found here.

SOUND Life Learning is our sister company which acts as our education arm. Here, we’re in process of creating further learning opportunities for both professionals and non-professionals.

Services offered through SOUND Life Learning: Live and on-demand courses and a large-scale IRP consultation & education group, where clinicians are asked to not share HIPAA protected information.

Why "SOUND"?

We selected this name for a few reasons. Firstly, we reside near the Salish Sea in the beautiful Puget Sound region of the Pacific Northwest. As we reflected on the term, we repeatedly returned to alternative meanings of "sound" - solid, firm, stable, secure, and reliable. These are attributes we strive for in our own lives, and we hope to assist others in discovering a stable and secure way of existing and navigating through the world - and all that arises in their experience, even in the midst of challenging & difficult times - as well.

Why SOUND Life Learning?

SOUND Life Learning offers a focused, Washington-specific training pathway for clinicians who want high-quality preparation in co-occurring care. We’re working in partnership with the Washington State Department of Health to provide the educational requirement and the required supervision for the Co-occurring Disorder Specialist Enhancement. This means you can build your pathway through a program designed around the actual requirements, taught by someone who knows the terrain.

Ready to move forward?

If you want stronger co-occurring skills and a clearer path toward the Washington COD Enhancement,
we invite you to train with Jeffery Roskelley through SOUND Life Learning.
